It's Lights Out and Away We Go, The Chinese Grand Prix Is Underway!

Here is everything you need to know about the Chinese Grand Prix.

History

The Chinese Grand Prix was first introduced to the F1 Calenders in 2004, where it was first won by Rubens Barrichello who was in Ferrari. The Chinese Grand Prix is since held in Shanghai, China at the Shanghai International Circuit. It is known for its unique layout and long back straight, which creates greta overtaking oppurtunities. It has since been won by many of the great drivers like Michael Schumacher, twice by Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg and 6 times by Lewis Hamilton!

The Shanghai International Circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke who is known for designing  many modern racing circuits all around the world. Turn 1 of the circuit is known famously as the "Snail Corner" due to it's tight, spiralling right-handed corner  causing the drivers to enter fast but slow down more as the corner ends, creating it one of the most unique corners of Formula 1, also having the longest back straight in Formula 1 of 1.2km makes the most challenging and exciting overatking oppurtunities for the drivers.

Sprint

The Chinese Grand Prix had the first sprint weekend of the season. The Sprint qualifying saw George Russell, Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris as the front lineup with Hamilton, Piastri, Leclerc, Gasly, Verstappen, Bearman and Hadjar all getting above P10 for the Sprint race.

George Russell won the Sprint Race finishing ahead of the Ferrari's drivers with an exciting battle with them.

  • George Russell started from Pole Position, the Sprint Race and managed to maintain his position till the end of the race after a fierce battle with the Ferrari Drivers.
  • Kimi Antonelli suffered a poor start and served a 10-second penalty in the pits after colliding with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar in the opening lap.
  • The Lineup for the Qualifying, Russell, Leclerc, Hamilton, Norris, Antonelli...

Qualifying

The Chinese Grand Prix qualifying rewrote History with Kimi Antonelli becoming the youngest driver to get Pole Position at just 19 years old after breaking the record for Sebastian Vettel at 21 years old. Antonelli beat teammate Russell by two-tenths of a second with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton highlighting a fierce on-going battle between Mercedes and Ferrari. The Front row saw Mercedes Kimi Antonelli and George Russell again as a 1-2 lineup and Hamilton and Leclerc behind the Mercedes and Piastri, Norris, Gasly, Verstappen, Hadjar and Bearman making their way into the top 10 grid places.

All Mercedes Drivers on the Podium

Bono with his drivers

Kimi Antonelli wins his first ever Grand Prix and becomes the second-youngest driver to do so!

With Lewis Hamilton securing his first podium with Ferrari since he joined the team last year!

The race started with Kimi Antonelli in Pole Position but he soon lost the lead to Lewis Hamilton but later returned to P1 ensuring his first maiden title. Mercedes got a 1-2 again but now with Kimi Antonelli leading. Antonelli thanked his team on the radio, thanking them to helping him achieve his team. But this race wasnt't just special for Antonelli but the ex-Mercedes driver and 7 time World Champion too, who got his first podium after a long year with no podiums with his new team, Ferrari. The Ferrari drivers had a fierce and proffesional last lap battle which concluded with Lewis Hamilton getting through. Toto Wolff seemed happy to all the Mercedes Drivers on the podium. Hamilton said, it was nice to see the "Mercedes Family" on the podium with him. George Russell later stepped out of the podium in the podium ceremony to give a chance to Bono to have a photo with his current and ex-driver.

McLaren, Red Bull, Aston Martin Suffer

The Weekend went amazing for both Mercedes and Ferrari but it was quite eventful as we also got to see 3 DNFs and 4 DNSs!

The reigning constructor's champions, McLaren oversaw a technical failure in their new cars and had to retire before even leaving the pit lane due to the fact that their cars were unable to even start.

Max Verstappen, the four time World Champion suffered a frustrating retirement with only 10 laps left due to a problem with a ERS (Energy Recovery System).

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll retired on lap 10 due to a battery issue and his teammate Fernando Alonso retired on Lap 33 due to "extreme vibrations" as reported by them earlier. The Honda powered engines produce severes vibrations that cause discomfort for the drivers and a feeling of numbness to them too.

Cadillac, Alpine and Williams Improving Their Cars

Cadillac got a impressive result with their drivers, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez finishing in 13th and 15th place showing a major develpoment in their reliability. This weekend was rather a satisfaction for Cadillac after suffering with double DNFs in the Australian Grand Prix.

The Alpine Drivers, Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto both managed to get points for Alpine showing us the improvement in their cars. Also showing us that the battle for midfield will be hot is Ollie Bearman with finshing P5 after a battle with Pierre Gasly and emerging of Carlos Sainz, scoring points for Williams for the first time in 2026 after a disappointed Australian GP.

Conclusion

The Chinese Grand Prix saw a dominating weekend for Mercedes with rewriting history twice and also a historical weekend for Ferrari. As we see, some teams and drivers are still struggling to adapt to the new regulations and power units. We have also got a faint idea on who to expect on top, bottom and middle. A horrible weekend for McLaren and Aston Martin and also, Verstappen, Bortoleto and Albon. With this, we head into a 1-week break before the Japenese Grand Prix.
